Kahui

Privacy Policy

Kahui shows you who is near you and what they are working on, and helps you make plans and coordinate events with them. This policy says what we collect, who can see it, and what you control. Kahui is an early build, and this policy will change as the app does.

What we collect

Your account: phone number, name, a photo if you add one, and a recovery email if you add one. Your profile: what you do, what you can help with, what you are looking for, what you are working on, and any links you add. Your check-ins: the place, the time, what you are working on that day, and a note if you write one. Plans and events you make or say you are in on. Messages, photos, GIFs, polls, links, and cards you send in chats, such as your profile, your events, or what you are working on. Your area: a rough position from your phone, saved at most once every 30 minutes while you use the app and kept as one point a day for 30 days, used only to work out the area you are usually around. Notes people write about each other. Ratings and facts about places. Feedback you send us. Blocks and reports. Basic device information and how you use the app, which we use to fix and improve it.

Location

When you check in, we save the place and, if you allow it, your phone's position at that moment so the pin lands in the right spot. While you are checked in, the app watches your location in the foreground so it can check you out when you leave. That live position is not stored. Only the check-in and when it ended are. The map uses your location to show what is near you. Other members see the area you are usually around as a place name and a distance, never a position; it comes from your check-ins when they can see them, otherwise from the rough positions above. You can turn location off in your phone's settings and still check in by picking the place.

Who can see what

Your profile, and the area you are usually around, are visible to signed-in members. Every check-in has an audience you choose: your connections, connections of connections, public, or everyone at that place. Connections are people you and they both said yes to. Messages are visible to the people in that chat. A plan or an event you make has an audience you choose: private, your connections, everyone, and any people or groups you pick. Notes about you show only after you keep them. Cafes and coworking spaces are public places on the map, and nothing about you shows at one unless you check in there with an audience that includes the person looking.

Services we use

Supabase (database, sign-in, file storage), Twilio (text-message codes), Apple (the map, place search, notifications on iPhone), Mapbox (turning addresses into map points), OpenStreetMap (opening hours for places), KLIPY (GIF search), Vercel (hosting the app), and Cloudflare (hosting kahui.app). When you paste a link, we fetch that page once to show a preview. We do not sell your data, and we do not show ads.

Your choices

Edit or delete anything you post. Choose the audience for each check-in, and set your default in Settings. Block and report people. Mute chats, and choose which notifications you get. Delete your account in Settings.

Data retention

We keep your data while your account is active. Check-ins end on their own after four hours. Deleting your account removes your profile, check-ins, plans, notes, and direct messages. Groups you were in carry on: if you were the only admin, the longest-standing member becomes admin, and a group with nobody else in it is deleted. Messages you sent in groups stay, shown with no name.

Age

Kahui is for adults. You must be 18 or older to use it.
